Abstract

This paper aims to provide an analytical insight into two interrelated topics, each of which is interesting in its own right. The first of them is dichotomy in music, namely, the various manifestations of binarity – that is, the juxtaposition of two different spheres of expression, either simultaneously, in counterpoint, or in succession. The second aspect targeted will be the presentation of the main trends, important concepts or compositional techniques used in the creation of such dichotomies, based on some relevant musical examples studied.
